Induction hardening quality control

Induction hardening is a fundamental heat treatment to increase the surface hardness and improve the mechanical properties of steel components. This technique uses localized heating by electromagnetic induction, followed by rapid cooling, to achieve targeted hardening of the material in the desired zone (martensitic transformation).
At Gambini Meccanica, this process is not just a production step, but a real quality standard, supported by rigorous controls and precision instrumentation.
What is induction hardening and which are its advantages
Induction hardening is particularly suitable for mechanical components such as racks and gears, where only specific functional areas need to be treated. The main advantages include:
-
Localized and rapid heating
-
Reduced deformation compared to other heat treatments
-
Precise treatment procedure, even tooth by tooth
-
Increased surface hardness and consequent wear resistance
-
Improved mechanical performance of the component
In the case of 16MnCr5 racks with carburizing, for example, induction hardening is carried out separately from the case-hardening process to achieve maximum precision and limit any deformation. Whereas, for MAGNUM racks, hardening is performed during the case of the case-hardening process.
Quality control in induction hardening: Gambini Meccanica procedure
To guarantee consistent and reliable results, Gambini Meccanica has invested in an in-house department entirely dedicated to induction hardening at its Pesaro headquarters, which is also equipped with a modern metallographic laboratory.
Quality control procedure is divided into several stages:
1. Metallographic tests
We use metallographic tests to precisely measure the surface hardness of treated parts. Values are expressed in HRC (Rockwell), HV (Vickers) or HB (Brinell), depending on the required specifications.
2. Magnetoscopic inspection (MT)
Through advanced magnetoscopic testing, we detect the presence of cracks or surface defects that could compromise the strength of the component. This inspection is essential to ensure the integrity of the treated teeth.
3. Heat treatment certificates
Upon request, each hardened part can be accompanied by a certificate attesting the achieved hardness. As regards the certificate for the depth of hardening, we only do this if the customer really needs it, as it is necessary for a piece to be destroyed. This document is however a guarantee for the customer, who can count on traceability and controlled quality.
4. Samples upon request
For special requirements, it is also possible to request sectioned samples, which make it possible to visually verify the depth of hardening and confirm the conformity of the treatment.
